POLYCARBONATE GLAZING SHEET - LEXAN® / marlon / ARLA

Engineering & Design Plastics mainly stock the LEXAN® and Marlon brands of polycarbonate (and to a lesser extent in certain thicknesses and opals ARLA), however we are able to source other brands of polycarbonate sheet to customer requirements.

Standard grade clear polycarbonate (Lexan 9030-112 / Marlon FS / Arla Makroclear) is an extruded sheet, suitable for indoor use in a variety of secondary glazing applications including machine guarding. Polycarbonate offers extremely high impact strength and good mechanical strength over a wide range of temperatures. Polycarbonate is the toughest available glazing material, with ~200 times the impact strength of normal glass of equal thickness.

Lexan Exell D,  Marlon fsx longlife and Arla Makrolife are suitable for out door use. These grades are slightly more expensive than the standard but have warranties (normally 10 years) against discolouration.

Although Polycarbonate is very strong in terms of impact, it will scratch easily! Grades of polycarbonate with a hard coat surface are available (Lexan Margard MR-5E , Marlon fs Hard, and Arla Saphir) which improves resistance to abrasion. It should be noted that no hard coat plastic is designed to with stand deliberate attacks with sharp objects. These standard "hard coat" grades are only suitable for flat glazing applications. Margard FMR-5E is also available which is scratch resistant and can be cold curved. The scratch resistant grades normally carry a 10 year limited warranty against breaking due to loss of impact strength through weathering and a 5 year limited warranty against excessive yellowing and loss of light transmission due to weathering.

Applications
  • In machine construction:
  Machine guards on bottle or can filling and closing machines, packaging machines, stamping and embossing machines, labeling machines, strapping machines, printing machines, machine tools, rope manufacturing machines, etc…
  • On vehicles:
  Window shields on cranes, forklifts, earth moving machines, agricultural and wood harvesting machinery, police vans, etc…
  • In the ship building and aircraft industries:
  Wind shields, hatch way covers, doors, portholes, distribution ducts on air craft heating systems, cladding inside air craft cabins, etc…

Please note,

Glazing methods for polycarbonate differ from those normally used for glass, because of its greater thermal expansion and flexibility. Care must be taken that products used are compatible with polycarbonate (EPDM - or Neoprene rubbers, never plasticized PVC). Not all silicone sealants are suitable. Engineering & Design Plastics stock silicone sealant to BS5889 type A, which is compatible with polycarbonate.
